Safeguarding at Life Skills Enterprise

At Life Skills Enterprise, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of every student is our highest priority. We are committed to ensuring that all students—each of whom has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) — are protected, supported, and empowered to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

We recognise that our students may face additional vulnerabilities, and our safeguarding approach is tailored to meet their individual needs. This includes placing a strong emphasis on communication support, emotional wellbeing, structured care, and proactive intervention.

Our safeguarding practices are underpinned by:

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE 2025)
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018, updated 2023)
  • The Independent School Standards (Part 3: Welfare, Health and Safety)
  • Local guidance from the Kent Safeguarding Children Multi-Agency Partnership (KSCMP)

Our Safeguarding Commitment includes:

  • A trained and experienced Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mickey Capeling, supported by a team of Deputy DSLs
  • A comprehensive Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, reviewed annually and adapted to our specialist setting
  • Safer recruitment processes for all staff and volunteers
  • Regular, tailored staff training that reflects the complex needs of our students
  • A whole-school approach to safeguarding, where every member of staff is vigilant and responsible
  • Focus on online safety, peer relationships, and mental health support
  • Regular liaison with parents/carers, health and social care professionals, and external safeguarding agencies
  • A carefully designed PSHE curriculum, supporting pupils to understand personal safety, relationships, and communication

We actively promote a culture of listening to students, with a strong focus on pupil voice. Staff are trained to recognise both verbal and non-verbal signs that may indicate a safeguarding concern.

If you have any concerns about a student’s safety or wellbeing, please contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mickey Capeling, via the school office.
